Does a VPN Actually Lower Your Ping? Here's What's Really Going On
VPN ads love the phrase "reduce lag." It's a strange claim if you think about what a VPN actually does — it adds a server in between you and the game, not removes one. So is it marketing nonsense, or is there something real behind it?
Short answer: for most people, a VPN makes ping slightly worse, not better. But there are two specific, real situations where it genuinely helps — and a separate reason entirely why a lot of competitive players use one regardless of ping.
The default case: yes, it usually adds latency
Routing your connection through an extra server and encrypting the traffic both take time, even if it's a small amount. In one documented test, connecting through a UK VPN server nearly doubled in-game latency on Overwatch 2, from 46ms to 80ms. That's the expected outcome for most people, most of the time — an extra hop is an extra hop.
Exception 1: your ISP's own routing is the problem
Your internet provider doesn't always send your traffic along the fastest physical path to a given game server — sometimes its default routing passes through slower intermediate points than necessary. A VPN provider with its own optimized network can occasionally route around that inefficiency and land on something genuinely faster to a specific server, even after adding its own hop. This isn't the norm, but it's real, and it's why a small number of people do see lower ping with a VPN turned on, specifically to certain servers.
Exception 2: your ISP is throttling gaming traffic
Some ISPs identify gaming, streaming, or torrenting traffic and deliberately slow it during busy periods. Because a VPN encrypts your traffic, the automated systems ISPs use to detect and throttle that traffic type generally can't identify it as gaming traffic anymore — which can mean getting your real, un-throttled speed back rather than an actual improvement over your best-case connection.
The real reason a lot of competitive gamers use one anyway
Ping usually isn't actually why serious players run a VPN — protection from DDoS attacks is. A number of older and peer-to-peer-based online games expose other players' IP addresses during a match. Griefers and rage-quitters have used that to run "booter" services against opponents, flooding their home connection and knocking them offline mid-match. A VPN hides your real IP behind the VPN provider's address, so even if someone captures the IP from your connection, they're attacking the VPN's server, not your home network. This benefit has nothing to do with ping, and it's the actual reason a VPN is worth it for a lot of gamers even when it makes latency very slightly worse.
The honest verdict
Don't buy a VPN on a blanket "reduces lag" promise — for most connections, it won't. If you suspect your ISP is throttling you, or a specific game server routes badly through your provider, it's worth testing directly: most reputable VPNs offer a free trial or money-back window specifically so you can compare your real ping with and without it before committing. And if DDoS protection during matches is the actual goal, that benefit holds regardless of what happens to your ping number.
